Thumb rings?

Postby Claire » Wed Oct 14, 2009 7:09 pm

Hi

I was wondering what other people do to protect their hand when they draw their bow. I tried a thumb ring out in Quicks but I assume it was too large (though it was the smallest size they stock) because I shot it down the range nearly as far as the arrow! For now I've settled on zinc oxide tape over the joint in my thumb with a single layer of, and I know this sounds ridiculous, the expanded polystyrene wrap that you sometimes get in parcels underneath the tape. The wrap is only 1mm thick but it really makes it more comfortable to draw my bow. Maybe I'm just a wuss :) but I'd rather avoid arthritis in my thumb in years to come...

Firstly nice to see you draw with the thumb :)

Most people today either use Zinc Oxide tape or nothing at all (Koreans and Poles). Recently in Turkey some riders were using thumb rings. I personally do not know if I would get on with one due to the possibility of it getting in the way of quick nocking. I have not properly analyzed their technique enough to make a decision. For me it is important to feel my arrows so I dont like to use anything and when my thumb hurts, I stick on tape!!

Thumb rings are good though for target archery and the like, especially if drawing heavy bows. The ones you buy in Quicks are basically no good. A thumb ring should be designed and carved specifically for each thumb to ensure it fits well.

The polystyrene wrap I have never seen before and look forward to seeing it in action!!!
